Deep Blue defeats Garry Kasparov 3.5 to 2.5 in a six-game rematch under classical time controls in New York.

What was ceded is a six-game match against the reigning world champion under standard time controls; Kasparov disputed the conditions and IBM declined a third match. Since the mid-2000s, engines running on ordinary hardware have been well beyond any human, and the question has not been reopened. Humans still play and the professional circuit is intact; what changed is that the strongest player is no longer a person.
