Driving a heavy truck on the motorway

ContestedSince 2025Criterion practiceLast reviewed 2026-08-17

Event

Aurora ran commercial freight between Dallas and Houston in the week of 1 May 2025 with nobody in the truck, the first driverless heavy haulage service on public roads.

Three weeks later a human observer was back in the driver's seat, at the request of Paccar, which builds the tractor and was unwilling to leave prototype parts unattended. That reversal is the honest state of the art. By February 2026 Aurora counted 250,000 driverless miles over five corridors in Texas and Arizona, thirty trucks in the fleet with ten of them running driverless, and it still had to remove the observer on a new platform. What is being ceded is the long motorway leg in fair weather on mapped and permitted corridors, which is also the easiest and least contested part of a driver's day. What is not: the yard, the dock, the pre trip inspection, the securing of a load, and every mile where the road stops matching the map.
