Buying advertising space by negotiation

On 18 September 2009, Google rebuilt the DoubleClick Ad Exchange around real-time bidding, so that each advertising impression was auctioned to the highest bidder while the page was loading.

A media buyer used to telephone a publisher, agree a price for a block of impressions and sign an insertion order. Bidding, pricing and placement are now settled in the tens of milliseconds between a page request and its display, and automated transactions account for more than 90 percent of United States digital display spending, about 92 percent in 2025 on eMarketer's estimate. People still set the budget, write the targeting and exclusion rules, decide which inventory is off limits, and answer for the advertisement that lands beside something the brand cannot be seen next to. Direct negotiation survives where scarcity and reputation matter, in sponsorships, television commitments and the largest homepage placements.
