Driving a metro train

Ceded to machinesSince 1998Criterion practiceLast reviewed 2026-08-17

Event

Line 14 of the Paris metro entered service on 15 October 1998, a high capacity line running with no staff on board at all.

London had run automatic train operation on the Victoria line since 1968, but an operator stayed in the cab to work the doors and press the two buttons that started the train. Line 14 removed the cab. The harder proof came later, when the RATP converted line 1, the oldest and busiest of the network, while it kept carrying passengers, and finished at the end of 2012. What was ceded is the driving, on a closed right of way, with platform screen doors and a signalling system that knows where every train is at every instant. Not ceded: the stations, the control room, and the judgment call to halt a line for an incident, which is still made by a person who will have to justify it.
