Moral judgment in unprecedented situations

Held by humansLast reviewed 2026-08-17

Where cases resemble past cases, rules and precedents carry most of the weight, and models trained on how people have judged can reproduce that weight well. The situations that matter most are the ones nobody has faced in that form, where the question is which features count and what to do when the guides run out. Whoever answers there is not applying a standard but taking a position that others will judge them for. A model can propose; the person who acts and stands to be blamed is the one who judges.
