Prescribing a medicine

Reading an image or proposing a diagnosis is contested. Signing the prescription is not. United States federal law reserves prescribing to a registered practitioner, which means a person or an institution, and the same bill has been filed twice to change that. The Healthy Technology Act appeared as H.R. 206 on 9 January 2023 and again as H.R. 238 on 7 January 2025, and would let artificial intelligence qualify as a practitioner where a state authorises it and the Food and Drug Administration has cleared it. Neither version advanced. The bill is the evidence for this line. Making a machine a prescriber requires an act of Congress, which is another way of saying that today the act belongs to a person. Systems already pick doses inside a protocol somebody signed, and the signature is the part that carries the liability.
