Trusting someone
Held by humansLast reviewed 2026-08-17
Reliance and trust are not the same relation. You rely on a lift, a timetable, a model's accuracy, and when reliance fails you are inconvenienced and you recalibrate. You trust a person, and when trust fails you are betrayed, which is a different injury needing a different repair. Philosophers mark the difference by the attitude involved. Trust makes you vulnerable to someone's goodwill and licenses resentment when that goodwill is abused. It is why calls for trustworthy systems are really calls for reliable ones with somebody standing behind them, and why the European rules on high risk systems place duties on providers and deployers rather than on the system. Reliance on machines will keep growing, and it should. Trust stays between people, because only a person can let you down.
