Reading a book aloud for publication

Apple Books opens digital narration to publishers on 5 January 2023, and Amazon opens a virtual voice tool to authors publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing later the same year.

The catalogue grew where no narrator would have been hired in the first place. More than 40,000 virtual voice titles were on Audible by May 2024, and Audible said in May 2025 that publishers could pick from over a hundred voices in several languages, with translation. Amazon put the share of its self published titles that had an audio edition at 4 percent before the tool existed, which is the gap the machine filled, mostly in genre fiction. Narrators kept the books that are performed rather than read out, where casting, accent and pacing are part of the edition. The label matters as much as the voice, and Apple requires a line stating that the narration is digital, so that a listener knows who is answering.
