Making an actor decades younger on screen

Industrial Light and Magic de-ages Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci across the whole of The Irishman in 2019, using a three camera rig and its Flux system, with no markers on the actors' faces.

Before this the options were casting a younger actor, prosthetics, soft light and distance, and none of them makes a face of seventy read as thirty in close up. The Irishman ran the effect over two and a half hours and about 1,750 shots, which took it out of the category of a single trick shot. In 2024 Metaphysic ran neural face replacement live on the set of Here, so that Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks could watch the young face in the monitor while the take was running, removing the delay between performance and result. The performance underneath is still a body and a voice belonging to a person, and the decision to show a face that no longer exists, with or without the consent of whoever owns it, is not a technical one.
