Trallfa of Bryne, in Norway, sells its first painting robot, taught by a painter who guides the arm through the movement while it is recorded on magnetic tape.
The machine came out of a wheelbarrow works that wanted its people away from the fumes, with a prototype running in the factory in 1967 and the first sale in 1969 to a Swedish bath maker who kept it in service for twenty years. The teaching method is the point, since the robot could do only what a painter had done first, recorded and replayed. Descendants of that arm now paint most of the world's car bodies, in booths no person can safely enter. Colour matching, inspection under light, sanding and polishing a fault, and the whole of repair and repaint work in body shops are still done by people, and the path a robot follows is still taught by someone who knows how paint behaves.
