Microsoft reports human parity with professional translators on the WMT 2017 Chinese-to-English news task; a document-level re-evaluation the same year finds raters still prefer the human translations.

Everyday and technical translation between well-resourced languages is largely ceded in practice: most translated text in the world now passes through a machine, and professional work has shifted toward post-editing. Literary translation is where the argument stays open; a 2023 study found large models handle paragraph-level context well yet still make critical meaning errors, and publishers continue to name and pay human translators. The contest is about voice, responsibility for the text and low-resource languages, not about the average sentence.
